On October 3rd, 2024, Chief Science Officers (CSOs) Preston and Braeden from Michigan hosted their seasonal Flight Night event—a hands-on aviation adventure designed to teach elementary school students about STEM concepts in aviation. This event took place at Jack Barstow Airport and featured a variety of engaging activities and opportunities for young learners to experience the science of flight up close.
Flight Night happens twice a year, each time inviting a different elementary school to participate. This fall, Central Park Elementary had the chance to attend, and students with smiles on their faces and equipped with new knowledge.
The students rotated among several interactive stations, each focusing on a unique aspect of aviation:
- Forces on a Plane: Exploring the four forces of flight—lift, thrust, drag, and gravity.
- Parts of an Airplane: Learning about the purpose and function of key aircraft components like wings, engines, and tails.
- Communication: Understanding how pilots and air traffic controllers work together to ensure safe flights.
- Flight Simulator: Giving students the chance to step into a virtual cockpit and try flying a plane themselves.
Beyond the stations, students had the rare opportunity to get up close to multiple real aircraft and speak with experienced pilots. These interactions brought the world of aviation to life and allowed students to ask questions and hear stories directly from those who regularly take to the skies.
Flight Night isn’t just a fun event; it’s an unforgettable experience that inspires the next generation to explore STEM and consider careers in aviation.
