As the Director of STEM at Saginaw Valley State University, Adrianne Cole works to connect K-12 educators, parents, and students with university programs and area businesses in the STEM fields. The mission of STEM@SVSU includes aligning and supporting STEM initiatives on campus and in the community, as well as connecting SVSU faculty, staff, and students with STEM volunteer opportunities throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region. Adrianne coordinates and manages numerous programs in this capacity, including the Chief Science Officers program, annual STEM educator dinner, coding and engineering programs, and acts as a university liaison for the FIRST Robotics State Championship held annually at SVSU. Under her guidance, STEM@SVSU has grown to over 30 programs, impacting hundreds of teachers and thousands of students each year.
Adrianne believes that it is vital to connect K-12 students with authentic experiences both in and out of the classroom by bridging the gap between industry and education. These beliefs stem from her personal and professional experiences in connecting industry and education. While an undergraduate biology student at SVSU, Adrianne conducted environmental research on the Saginaw Bay Watershed, focusing on the DDT levels in the Pine River near St. Louis, Michigan. This hands-on research experience led her to a position as a chemist, before returning to SVSU and earning a teaching certification in biology, chemistry and general science. During her time as an educator, she developed the curriculum for the environmental science course, as well as hands-on curriculum for both biology and chemistry courses. Adrianne continued her relationship with Saginaw Valley State University as a master’s student in the College of Education and as an adjunct professor in the chemistry department before becoming the STEM Program Manager and eventually the Director of the STEM center. In addition to her educational work, Adrianne enjoys spending time with her husband and daughters, as well as travelling, reading, photography, and outdoor activities.
