Arizona students in grades six through 12 learned to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics and to foster innovation in their schools and communities at the Chief Science Officer Summer Institute, July 16 to 19.

The CSO summer institute is a collaboration of efforts from the CSO program and the ASU Biodesign Institute, Environmental Health and Safety, the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and Knowledge Enterprise Development.

Chief Science Officer students attended training, workshops and toured both the Arizona State University Biodesign Institute and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. This year’s attendees were selected by their peers, some of which included international delegations from Kuwait and Sonora, Mexico.

“The Chief Science Officer Program is building tomorrow’s global leaders by empowering students today,” said Kelly Greene, director of student success for the Arizona Technology Council Foundation. “CSOs are working directly with industry and community leaders to envision the future workforce and address the lack of qualified workers.”

At the summer institute, CSOs focused on creating Action Plans for the 2018–19 school year and developed skills to amplify their voices. CSO students look for science opportunities such as field trips, science nights and speakers, check this. They also serve as science ambassadors in their communities and speak to city councils, chambers of commerce and school boards.

“It was a pleasure to welcome the CSO program’s large group of motivated young professionals to ASU,” said Sean Dudley, executive director of ASU Knowledge Enterprise Development. “They asked many interesting questions about leadership, science, technology and other related topics,” The program’s staff did an excellent job of encouraging their attendees to take full advantage of this opportunity to speak with the many representatives from outside companies and ASU that volunteered their time to support this effort.”

The CSO program began in 2012 with 138 CSOs in Arizona. Currently, a national community of more than 500 CSOs now exists globally. Learn more about the CSO program on the Chief Science Officer’s website.
